Powerful New 2.2 Litre Engine

The 2.2 litre engine standard in Vectra GL and CD sedans and Vectra GL wagon was developed by Holden's Engine Operations and represents one of the first applications of this engine in Vectra worldwide. Based on the original DOHC 16 valve 2.0 litre engine, the 2.2 version has a longer stroke of 94.6mm (compared with 86mm). Bore is unchanged at 86mm. With the extra capacity, maximum power increases from 100 to 104kW at 5200 rpm, which is 400rpm lower than the 2.0 litre engine. The effect of this power increase is enhanced as it is developed lower in the rev range.

Maximum torque of 200Nm at 4000rpm represents an 8 per cent increase over the 2.0 litre engine. While the benefit of the higher torque is particularly apparent at the lower end, it is also evident right across the rev range.

Offsetting higher reciprocating forces from the longer stroke, twin counter-rotating balance shafts are mounted in an iron housing inside the crankcase. They are driven at twice engine speed from the crankshaft, which is fitted with a gear drive from the third counterweight. A new high output oil pump and an increased capacity cooling system complete the specification change.

Transmission

To complement the higher torque character of the 2.2 litre engine, the automatic transmission has been strengthened and the shift pattern recalibrated. Fewer downshifts are required when hill climbing, and the transmission's smooth shifting character is retained.

The automatic retains Vectra's neutral idle feature, which provides up to 3 per cent lower fuel consumption in heavy traffic.

Manual transmission ratios have been changed to suit the new engine. A longer fifth gear makes for even more relaxed highway cruising, while still providing excellent acceleration response.

Suspension

Local production of the Vectra sedan and wagon afforded Holden chassis engineers the opportunity to further develop suspension set-ups to suit Australia's rougher road conditions, typified by broken bitumen surfaces and suburban speed humps.

While providing a suspension with a slightly more supple feel, Holden ensured that Vectra ride and handling retained its 'driver's car' European flavour. The rear spring rate has been reduced by 11 per cent and rear shock absorber valving has been revised to improve rebound control and to soften impact harshness. Australian-developed Bridgestone tyres complement the package by providing a reduction in road noise transmission on coarse chip surfaces.

Safety and Security

The basis of Vectra's advanced safety system is a rigid occupant cell, computer-developed for all accident configurations that provides maximum survival space. In addition to such features as ABS braking and traction control, Vectra's sophisticated multi-link independent rear suspension with dynamic safety geometry provides predictable handling under all conditions.

A 60 litre driver airbag is standard on all models, and Vectra CD also has a passenger airbag as standard. A unique brake and clutch pedal breakaway system reduces the risk of damage to drivers' feet in the event of a serious accident, and further safety advances include height-adjustable seat belts with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners.

Vectra's high-tech security system features remote control central locking with rolling security code, a deadlock facility, electronic vehicle immobiliser, lockable rear seatbacks and PIN sound system protection.

Comfort and Convenience

All Vectra models are equipped with a range of clever features that include a multi-function display with time, date and outside temperature and incorporating audio display; a clean air filter system which prevents dust, pollen and other allergens from entering the cabin; tachometer; five position steering wheel height adjustment; cup holders; premium six speaker sound system with speed dependent volume control; remote control heated exterior mirrors and road speed sensitive intermittent windscreen wipers.

Vectra CD sedan and hatch offer such extras as remote radio/CD controls mounted in a leather-covered steering wheel; enhanced multi-function display including trip computer; electronic cruise control; power windows with express down and safety auto reverse functions; air conditioning; adjustable lumbar support; driver/passenger illuminated vanity mirrors; front centre armrest; front spot lamps and rear reading lamps.
